Mass Storage / Backup

2007.07.12 - 16:47 last modified

Overview

Host backup and online archive services are provided:

  1. Host backup: File backup service for servers in Academia Sinica is provided.
    • The incremental backup method is adopted; four versions of modified server files are sequentially recorded to the Computing Center's Disk Array or Tape Library.
    • Users can restore a file, a directory or even the whole machine.
    • Supports many operation system platforms currently on the market, including: Apple, Digital, HP, IBM,Linux, Microsoft, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystem etc., and on-line backup database such as DB2, Informix and Oracle.
  2. Online archive: Provides long term backup service for online files.
    • Upload files using tools such as FTP, SFTP and NFS.
    • Files are saved in hierarchical storages (Disk Array and Tape Library). To maintain a certain amount of free disk space on the Disk Array, infrequently used files will automatically be moved to the Tape Library whenever the Disk Array exceeds the high water mark.
    • File transfers are transparent to both users and applications; when an application requires files that are in the Tape Library, those files will automatically be moved back to the Disk Array.

How to use

  • Host backup: First, please apply for an account for the backup host. Install the backup client program once you receive a reply from the Computing Center. Files will then be automatically backup to the backup server, and can be restored from the backup server at any time.
  • Online archive: Use FTP tools (File transfer software, such as ws_ftp, winscp or FileZilla) to upload or download files. This system saves files in a hierarchical architecture; therefore, the amount of data transferable by each unit will depend on the available disk space of each account (between several tens to several hundreds of GB). The amount of data transferred in one upload can¡¦t exceed the available disk space; there are no other limitations besides this.
